Taking a few minutes to breathe can make a big difference.

Square breathing, also known as box breathing, is a quick and easy way to help you move from anxious or stressed out to a better state. It’s called square breathing because you breathe following a pattern like the four sides of a square. Square breathing is great for reducing stress, improving concentration, and calming your mind. Read on to learn how to do it and it's benefits.

How to Practice Square Breathing

Here are the easy steps to practice square breathing:

  1. Get comfortable: Sit or stand in a comfortable position. Make sure your back is straight and your shoulders are relaxed.

  2. Inhale: Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose for a count of four. Imagine you are filling your lungs with air like a balloon.

  3. Hold: Hold your breath for another count of four. Picture the air staying inside your body.

  4. Exhale: Slowly breathe out through your mouth for a count of four. Imagine the air leaving your body.

  5. Hold Again: Hold your breath again for a count of four before you take another breath in. This completes one cycle of square breathing.

Repeat these steps four times. Sounds simple enough, but it can make a big difference!
