Celebrate May with This Simple Mental Health Reminder

Did you know that May is Mental Health Month? It is a special time where we can focus on learning more about mental health, reducing stigma, and assessing our own emotional needs. How cool is that?! This mental health reminder is the perfect time to check-in with ourselves and others about some really important topics.

Of course, our mental health is important all year long, but this month on the calendar serves as a reminder that taking care of our emotional and psychological health is just as important as caring for our physical health.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is hard to define because it covers so many aspects of our lives. Basically, if it deals with your thoughts, feelings, or perceptions– that's mental health. It is key to how we cope with stress, connect with others, make decisions, and navigate the challenges of everyday living. Yet, many people continue to silently struggle with issues that make life difficult like:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma

  • Grief

  • Burnout

  • Etc.

Mental Health Month is powerful because it shows us that we are not alone. Everyone deals with mental health struggles now and then. When you take the time to talk about it, the shame and stigma wash away.

Getting Rid of Shame and Stigma

That said, more people are recognizing that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness. Therapy, support groups, and self-care practices are all great options for fortifying your mental health. The more you seek care and support, the easier challenges become. In turn, you may create healthier relationships and genuinely improve your lifestyle.

An important mental health reminder: mental health care doesn’t always mean responding to a crisis. It can also mean seeking growth in areas such as healthy boundaries, improving relationships and developing coping skills to address problems before they become overwhelming.

Personalizing This Mental Health Reminder

When we talk openly about mental health, everyone benefits. Still, there are ways you can use this Mental Health Month to support your own unique life goals. Use this mental health reminder to check-in with yourself and your loved ones! A simple question like “How are you really doing?” shows you care. If the conversation progresses, following up with listening without judgment and providing a safe space to talk openly is all it takes to make a difference.

Getting Creative

After that check-in, ask, ‘how can you celebrate Mental Health Month?’  There is no set list. Your mental health routine can change depending on your own goals, personality, and values. For example, some people might prioritize time in nature, while others commit to a daily gratitude practice

Whatever you decide, try to weave one thing into your routine this May that boosts your mental health. Who knows, it might become a life-long habit!

Consider Starting Therapy

One of the easiest ways you can celebrate Mental Health Month is starting your own health journey. Therapy can be one of the most powerful tools in your mental health tool kit. If you’re considering seeking help, reach out to us today to schedule a consultation.
